Jennifer Lopez est née le 24 juillet 1970 dans le Bronx. Ses parents d'origine portoricaine sont entrés aux Etats-Unis peu avant la naissance de leurs trois filles. Jennifer a grandi dans un quartier violent et vécu dans le plus grand dénuement, elle prend très vite conscience qu'elle devra lutter pour s'en sortir dans la vie.
Jennifer Lopez fait ses débuts en tant que danseuse dans des spectacles musicaux, elle est remarquée par des agents lors d'une audition et tourne son premier film, en 1986, My little girl. A seulement 15 ans, elle est déjà mariée avec un assistant de production, David Cruz. Presque dix ans se passent avant qu'elle ne rejoue au cinéma dans Money Train, en 1995, puis sa carrière prend un sérieux coup de fouet, elle enchaîne la même année avec My family puis Jack en 1996, sous la direction de Francis Ford Coppola et donne la réplique à Robin Williams.
L'année suivante, elle remporte un concours pour incarner le rôle-titre de Selena. Sa participation est très remarquée et elle décroche une nomination aux Golden Globe Awards. Elle tourne, la même année, Demi-tour, Anaconda et Blood and wine.
En 1998, elle joue avec George Clooney dans Out of sight et reçoit des éloges pour son jeu d'actrice. Jennifer se souvient de la scène d'amour qu'elle a tourné avec le bel acteur et elle dit de George Clooney qu'il est l'acteur de Hollywood qui embrasse le mieux. Elle divorce la même année de son second mari, le mannequin Ojani Noa.
Jennifer Lopez veut tout faire à l'instar de Shirley MacLaine et Bette Midler : chanter, danser et jouer la comédie. En juin 1999, sort son album On the six. Le disque, qui est un succès, s'intitule ainsi en référence au métro numéro 6 qu'elle empruntait chaque jour. En décembre de la même année, Jennifer est arrêtée avec son fiancé de l'époque, le rappeur P. Diddy, après une fusillade dans un night-club de New York. Elle retrouve rapidement l'amour avec un de ses danseurs, Chris Judd qu'elle épouse. Sa carrière jalonnée de scandales par ci, par là marche bien. Elle devient un sex-symbol, notamment grâce à ses fesses dont les jalouses parlent comme d'un "gros popotin". Jennifer Lopez devient l'actrice latine la mieux payée d'Hollywood avec un cachet de 9 millions de dollars par film.
En 2001, elle tourne la comédie The wedding Planner et Angel Eyes. Dans ce film, elle incarne une femme policier travaillant dans les quartiers chauds de Chicago. Son dernier album J.Lo sort en janvier 2001 et connaît un énorme succès. Il se classe en tête des ventes.
En 2002, elle tourne dans Plus jamais puis revient à la comédie avec Coup de foudre à Manhattan. Le tournage de Gigli chamboule la vie de la jeune femme. C'est par le biais de ce tournage qu'elle rencontre l'acteur Ben Affleck. A l'époque de leur rencontre, Jennifer Lopez est mariée depuis le 29 septembre 2001 à son danseur Chris Judd. Les deux acteurs démentent les rumeurs de liaison et tournent une nouvelle fois ensemble dans Jersey girl. A partir d'août 2002, ils n'hésitent plus à afficher publiquement leur amour et leur relation fait sans cesse les gros titres des journaux. C'est également en 2002 qu'elle sort un album de remixes, J To Tha L-O !, puis l'album This Is Me... Then.
La presse est convaincue que les deux tourtereaux se marieront dès que Jennifer aura officiellement divorcé de son second mari. Ce n'est pas le cas, ils se séparent avec fracas début 2004 et Jennifer Lopez se réfugie dans les bras de Marc Anthony, un ex, pendant que l'acteur s'adonne au jeu et à la boisson avant qu'il ne retrouve l'amour lui-même dans les bras de Jennifer Garner.
